We are excited to announce that two of Planning NEXT’s projects have been recognized by the Small Town and Rural (STaR) Division of the American Planning Association with awards for excellence in planning. The 2024 Fairfield County, Ohio, Comprehensive Plan received the Honor Vernon Dienes Award for a Large Jurisdiction, and FRAMEWORK, Licking County, Ohio, was honored with a Merit Award for the John Keller Planning Initiative.
Fairfield County Comprehensive Plan: A Bold Vision for Growth and Preservation
Fairfield County stands at a pivotal moment, experiencing rapid economic growth while striving to maintain its rural identity. The 2024 Comprehensive Plan, adopted on March 19, 2024, provides a strategic approach to balancing development with the protection of agricultural heritage. Nestled in central Ohio, adjacent to the fast-growing Columbus metropolitan area, Fairfield County faces increasing development pressure—heightened by Intel’s $28 billion investment in neighboring Licking County.
Recognizing the need for proactive planning, the County engaged in a community-driven process to craft a vision for responsible growth, ensuring that new development enhances the character of its communities. The plan lays out a clear roadmap for land use, infrastructure investment, and environmental preservation, empowering local leaders and residents with tools to guide the County’s future.
FRAMEWORK, Licking County: A Collaborative Approach to Unprecedented Change
The FRAMEWORK initiative emerged in response to a transformative moment for Licking County—Intel’s historic investment and the uncertainty that followed. Covering 15 local governments and 264 square miles, FRAMEWORK became an unprecedented collaborative planning effort.
This initiative turned a moment of uncertainty into a strategic opportunity, demonstrating the power of collective action in rural planning. By aligning local policies, coordinating infrastructure efforts, and fostering transparent community engagement, FRAMEWORK has provided a strong foundation for managing growth while preserving community values. As it moves into implementation, the plan continues to serve as a model for how rural areas can respond to large-scale shifts.
We are honored to see these projects recognized at the national level and extend our gratitude to the leaders, stakeholders, and community members who contributed to these successful planning efforts. Their commitment to planning is shaping a brighter future for central Ohio!
