The City of Mobile, Alabama’s Planning Commission has unanimously approved the Map for Mobile Comprehensive Plan. The year-long process for creating the plan involved extensive community outreach, including a Focus on the Future workshop that drew over 400 participants as well as innovative online engagement opportunities. The final plan can be viewed online.
Mobile has tremendous assets, including a rich culture and history and important economic development opportunities. The city also faces challenges, including population decline, regional suburban sprawl, traffic congestion and income inequality. Map for Mobile focuses on seven planning elements: built environment, mobility and connectivity, neighborhoods, city facilities and services, economic development, natural resources and collaboration and cooperation. It lays a foundation for zoning, land use, code and ordinance changes and will serve as a “living document” that will be reviewed on an annual basis.
