On January 8th, a vision for the site of the former Good Samaritan Hospital and surrounding neighborhoods in Northwest Dayton was unveiled. Nearly 200 community members turned out for an interactive Open House for Phoenix Next, a process to develop a re-use and investment strategy for the site and area.
The work was driven by two over-arching themes. One theme, Promoting Health and Wellness, focused on getting “upstream” from health issues and connecting people who live and work in the area to wellness opportunities. The second theme, Advancing Next Generation Learning, centered on supporting a “game-changing” partnership approach to educational programming and the provision of wrap around” services for families. Following a brief presentation, participants had the opportunity to review recommendations on display boards that fell into four categories: On Site (for the 13-acre site), surrounding neighborhoods (covering an approximately half mile radius around the site), beyond the neighborhoods (covering a broader geography of Northwest Dayton and the City) and programs.
