On September 24, over 250 residents and partners gathered at the Athens Community Career Academy in Athens Clarke-County, Georgia to hear about Envision Athens’ progress in the one year since the plan was completed. The anniversary highlighted progress so far in advancing key priority actions, such as the creation of a street outreach position and a behavioral health crisis response team. In addition to the anniversary celebration, Good Neighbor Awards were announced recognizing some of the hometown heroes that make Athens a great community.
Beyond these accomplishments, Envision Athens has paved the way for other impactful planning efforts that Planning NEXT has been proud to assist with, such as:
- The Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH), designed to increase access to affordable rental through the redevelopment of multi-family development;
- Network for Southern Economic Mobility (NSEM), which has drawn from themes of Envision Athens to address barriers to marginalized youth’s development and upward economic mobility; and
- Connect Athens, a corridor planning process for the major east-west thoroughfares of Atlanta Highway and Lexington Road.
Envision Athens is a community movement led by a shared vision for Athens-Clarke County that Planning NEXT was engaged to facilitate. At its core was an award-winning public outreach effort that leveraged institutional capacity and grassroots passion to bring over 1,600 community members together through nearly 60 engagement opportunities that generated nearly 9,000 ideas for the future. More information on the Envision Athens planning process can be found here.
We are happy to celebrate one year of envisioning together with the Athens-Clarke community!
