October 8 was an exciting day for The Next 10, a comprehensive plan evaluation for College Station, Texas led by Planning NEXT. Our Principal, Jamie Greene and Senior Planner, Michael Curtis, along with Alyssa Halle-Schramm, Long-Range Planning Administrator from the City of College Station shared the project at the APA New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas Cross Chapter Collaborative Conference.
Over 100 attendees joined the session titled “Plan to Plan” which explored how pre-planning efforts lead to better comprehensive plans. The Next 10 was featured as an example that involved 1) shaping how the planning process is to be organized and conducted; 2) aligning expectations with stakeholders; 3) building relationships, partnerships and understanding the work others are doing; 3) assessing existing plan(s) to better understand what has been accomplished, what has not, and why; and 4) thinking strategically about the focus of the technical aspect of the comprehensive plan. Throughout the project process, The Next 10 project team developed an engagement and technical approach based on understanding community priorities and perspective.
The day ended with even more excitement, as College Station City Council accepted the Evaluation & Appraisal Report that night. Council members and City management complimented the process, the level of public engagement, and the management and facilitation of the project.
Congratulations to the The Next 10 team for all the great work!
