Suffolk, Virginia, is a quickly growing City that is committed to high quality future development. It is also a unique jurisdiction with the municipal structure of a City, but the character and context of a large, geographically diverse, multi-jurisdictional county, with both urban and rural areas.
Planning NEXT, along with McBride Dale Clarion, Clarion Associates, EPR P.C., TischlerBise and Ninigret Partners, has been selected to facilitate the 2035 Comprehensive Plan update for the City. In preparation for the update, the planning team participated in a two-day retreat at which City Council discussed goals for the upcoming year, the success of the previous plan and their vision for the update. The discussion included seven key topics: impactful engagement, focused growth, character-oriented land analysis, regional modeling and mobility, fiscal sustainability, economic opportunities and liabilities and housing.
The retreat demonstrated City Council’s enthusiasm for the process and their desire to remain active in promoting, developing and championing the update. The team looks forward to continuing to work with Council, City staff and the community on this important effort.
