Plan Carbondale: Charting a Sustainable Future for a Unique Southern Illinois City

By September 9, 2024September 16th, 2024Project Updates, Town-Gown

This week, Planning NEXT will travel to the City of Carbondale, Illinois, to kick off work to help shape the future of the vibrant Southern Illinois community through the development of a new comprehensive plan. Nestled in the rolling hills of the Shawnee National Forest, Carbondale is a unique blend of natural beauty and small-town charm. Despite facing challenges like population decline, the City has continued to thrive as a desirable place to live, work, and play.

With its surrounding natural assets, two state parks, and proximity to the University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale offers a distinct appeal. The University plays a central role in the community, and Planning NEXT will collaborate closely with university leadership to identify shared interests and opportunities for mutual growth.

A focus of the planning process is Carbondale’s commitment to sustainability. The City has set ambitious goals, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050 and a 45% reduction in emissions by 2030. These goals reflect the community’s dedication to creating a sustainable future that balances environmental stewardship with economic vitality.

Through the planning process, Plan Carbondale, Planning NEXT will help the City navigate these priorities while building on its existing strengths. We look forward to working with Carbondale’s residents, businesses, and institutions to ensure that this comprehensive plan reflects the values, needs, and aspirations of everyone who calls Carbondale home.
