Planning NEXT is excited to begin work on a comprehensive plan for the Borough of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. Located approximately 10 miles southwest of Philadelphia, Swarthmore is a mature, high-expectation, inner-ring suburb known for its civic engagement, rich history, and strong sense of place. Home to Swarthmore College, the Borough blends small-town cham with a lively academic presence.
The Borough’s planning efforts build upon a Multi-Municipal Comprehensive Plan (MMCP) adopted in 2006. However, the time has come for Swarthmore to develop its own plan. With limited opportunities for large-scale development, the focus will be on refining and enhancing the Borough’s character while addressing future needs. The new plan will provide a thoughtful roadmap to help guide decisions around land use, housing, historical preservation, and community development, ensuring that Swarthmore remains a place its residents are proud to call home.
At the heart of this planning process is the active involvement of the Swarthmore community. Planning NEXT is working closely with the Borough as they finalize the selection of the Steering Committee, with an official kick-off meeting planned for next week. Through a series of public meetings, stakeholder discussions, charrettes, and community engagement opportunities, residents will play a key role in shaping the future.
