Planning NEXT has been engaged by the City of Mobile to create an innovative Neighborhood Planning Toolkit that will empower neighborhood groups to proactively plan for their own communities. This exciting initiative is a key step toward implementation of the Map for Mobile Comprehensive Plan which was approved in late 2015. The Toolkit will include a variety of resources to assist interested neighborhood groups in pursuing area plans, fostering local community engagement and undertaking synergy-building neighborhood improvement projects. The toolkit will allow for a more equitable approach to neighborhood scale planning and investment by giving all neighborhoods the necessary resources and support to make a difference in their communities.
In late April, neighborhood leaders were engaged through a survey and a meeting to help the team assess the capacity of community groups and to identify what would be most helpful to include in the Toolkit. The team will begin drafting resources for the Toolkit based on this input. In mid-summer, draft resources will be shared with the City and neighborhood leaders for additional feedback.
